Director of Nursing

Position Overview:

JSL is looking for a dynamic Director of Nursing for Assisted Living.

The Director of Nursing oversees the health services department and ensures the wellness and safety of our residents. They provide team member direction and support and work with an interdisciplinary team to develop service plans while coordinating care to meet the residents' changing needs.

Resident Care Services:

  • Responsible for the overall medical and physical well-being of residents.
  • Professionally interface with residents, staff, families, local professionals, and community about resident needs.
  • Ensure residents’ right to privacy and maintain their dignity and be respectful of residents.
  • Assist and respond to sponsor/family needs pertaining to medical care of resident.
  • Maintain residents’ medical and health records. Document routinely in resident’s medical record in an informative and descriptive manner that reflects the care provided, as well as the resident’s response to care.
  • Perform nursing administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, charting as needed.
  • Coordinate care with visiting physicians and outside physicians and process all orders. Record on Physician Order from, resident’s chart, and medication administration record (MAR) as required.
  • Review and complete internal Accident/Incident reports as needed. Notify the resident’s family, physician and Administrator of facility as per department policy. Provide documentation to State of Michigan as per requirement. Document in resident’s chart.
  • Create and maintain resident care plans. Consult with interdisciplinary team members when creating / changing care plans. Including interviewing care staff and nursing staff.
  • Monitor and address resident health issues that may arise with resident. Communicate as necessary with medical personnel and family/sponsor. Communicate changes to other care and nursing staff as well as inter-disciplinary team.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies in the building and handle on-call medical questions.
  • Perform daily rounds to ensure that prescribed treatments are being properly administered by staff.
  • Assess all potential residents with Resident Service Coordinator. Complete all necessary documentation.
  • Reassess residents for return to facility following rehabilitation or hospital stay. Upon re-admission, process all orders and instruct/educate staff accordingly.
  • Follow facility policy and procedure when a death of a resident occurs.
  • Oversee medication ordering, labeling, and distribution and communicate regularly with pharmacy.
  • Responsible of disposing of drugs as required in accordance with established procedures. Notify Assisted Living Director of all drug and narcotic discrepancies. Complete medication incident report as needed.
  • Daily review of medication administration record (MAR) for completeness and accuracy in the transcription of the physician’s orders in adherence to established policies.
  • Attend meetings, in-services, continuing education classes, and seminars as needed.
  • Must ensure the timely and effective communication of changes in residents health to the care and nursing staff as well as the interdisciplinary team.
  • Is responsible for complying with federal, state, local and facility policies, procedures, and licensing regulations.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Conduct timely and effective communication with care staff regarding changes in condition or level of care/Care Plans to ensure that appropriate care is being rendered.
  • Regularly attend/conduct staff meetings: administrative team, care staff and nursing.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development of staff.
  • Discipline and counsel staff as needed, following JSL guidelines. Maintain documentation for all counseling sessions.
  • Conduct interviews for new PCA's and participate in orientation and training as needed with the assistance of scheduler and nursing staff.
  • Trains staff in the following areas: Med Pass, Infection Control, Reporting Requirements, ADLs.

Qualifications

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to execute all terms and conditions set forth in the JSL Employee Handbook, including but not limited to:

  • Director of Nursing complies with company policies and procedures and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are critical for this position. Must possess the ability to exhibit strong leadership skills while working as part of an interdisciplinary team. Should have 3-5 plus years’ experience as a nurse manager.

Experience:

  • Nursing: 5-8 years (Required)
  • Valid Michigan LPN or RN (Preferred)
  • 5+ year Experience with Geriatric population (Required) in an Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing Facility
  • Supervising experience: 3 years (Required)

Required license or certification:

  • LPN

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Lifting of approximately 25 pounds with occasional lifting of residents and small objects, sitting, walking, talking and hearing.
