Camp Raanana Waterfront Director

At Camp Raanana, we look for bright, fun, enthusiastic, and hard-working staff who have a passion for working with kids and a love of the outdoors. We are a Jewish day camp operated out of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Ann Arbor. Thanks to our Cedar Lake site, Camp Raanana has all the overnight feel, with the flexibility and accessibility of a day camp! Activities range from athletics, archery, nature, art, music, swimming and so much more!

Qualifications

  • Current and Valid Lifeguard Certification (preference given to waterfront certification)
  • Strong Background Working as a Lifeguard
  • Experience in Leadership Role
  • Experience leading and teaching swim lessons to a wide range of ages and swimming abilities
  • Ideal Candidate is WSI certified
  • Ability to communicate with, relate to, and serve as an example to all campers
  • Proven management, communication and organizational skills, and the ability to be creative and take direction/instruction
  • Ability to pass a background check

Waterfront Director Responsibilities

  • Serving as an authority on safety at the waterfront, working closely with staff to ensure safety standards and procedures are understood and maintained at all times by all camp staff and campers
  • Understanding camp emergency policies and procedures on Waterfront operations
  • Properly instructing all campers and staff on safety standards and procedures for all waterfront activities
  • Overseeing swim testing for all staff and campers to ensure that campers participate in activities according to their swimming abilities
  • Conducting Swim lessons for all age groups and swimming abilities
  • Experience and desire for working with youth
  • Willingness to follow/give directions and work as a team member
  • Strong leadership and organization skills
  • Willingness to ask for assistance when needed or desired
  • Ability to interact with all age levels
  • Capacity to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner
  • supervise others of varying ages and abilities

General Responsibilities

  • Assist during other parts of the camp day
  • Be flexible in response to current and emergency situations and to shifts in responsibilities and assignments when camp is underway
  • Listen to, respect, follow the decisions of, and report any emergencies or inappropriate behavior to the camp director
  • Supervise groups of staff and campers, acting as guardian, advocate, and disciplinarian, and put their best interests first
  • Maintain a safe and healthy environment for campers, abiding by all camp rules/policies
  • Be a responsible and dedicated role model to the campers
  • Respect and encourage the wellbeing of campers of all Gender Identities and Cultural Backgrounds
  • provide organized, punctual and intentional leadership, creativity, direction and supervision during all aspects of the camp day
  • Work with other staff members to provide a quality experience for all members of the camp community

Physical Demands

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards
  • Ability to enforce safety regulations and execute appropriate emergency procedure
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury) and possess strength and endurance require to maintain constant supervision of campers
  • Activities may include / require:
    • Prolonged standing, walking
    • Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment
    • The need to lift up to 50 lbs
    • Prolonged exposure to outdoor elements (sun, wind, rain, etc.) and animals or insects (bugs, etc.)

Training

Staff training will be held prior to camp beginning. Applicant must be able to attend staff training.

Compensation

Equivalent of $20-22 an hour Based on Qualifications and Experience (Absences unpaid)

Camp Locations and Hours

The Camp Day begins at 8am at the JCC

(Staff are asked to arrive at 7:50 to be ready for drop-off)

Busses are taken to the Chelsea location at 8:30 where most of the camp day occurs, before returning to the JCC for pickup at 4pm

Post Care: Post Care for additional pay (4:20-6:00 PM)
