GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Direct Support Professionals help adults with disabilities achieve long-term success and fulfillment in work and life by helping them become independent and integrated into their communities. In Skill Building, Direct Support Professionals help individuals build their skills and become more integrated into the community through meaningful volunteer work at local non-profits. At our Supported Employment sites, Direct Support Professionals assist individuals in successfully finding and maintaining a job that meets their skills, interests and abilities with on-going support.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalency required, two years of college preferred

Other:

Must be at least 21 years of age. Three to four years related work experience serving individuals with disabilities preferred. Knowledge of performance measurement systems, mobile crew and enclave operations preferred. Knowledge of janitorial supplies and equipment and/or operations specific to assigned sites preferred. Receipts Rights training required within 30 days of hire. First Aid and CPR certification required within 90 days of hire. Working knowledge of training techniques, behavior modifications, task analysis. Fluency in American Sign Language is a plus. Interpersonal skills sufficient to communicate with consumers, public and staff. Composition skills sufficient to prepare required reports. Driving record must be sufficient to meet driving standards as established by Agency insurance carrier and will be run annually along with criminal background check, to comply with funding source requirements. Reliable automobile and valid Michigan driver's license, proof of registration and insurance.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Schedule the people that we serve daily to sites and activities
  2. Use behavior modification, task analysis, data collection and recording, and related techniques to implement goal-related services. Review the progress of the people that we serve and work with navigators to develop and/or revise program goals.
  3. Provide regular and systematic feedback to the people that we serve regarding their performance. Using reasonable judgment, successfully manage challenges with the people that we serve until supervisory consultation/back-up is provided so that safety is maintained.
  4. Provide formal and informal in-service/training (including role modeling) to community partners, the public, co-workers and the people that we serve to facilitate social integration.
  5. Modify training techniques and/or the environment to accommodate various disabilities of the people that we serve.
  6. Transport the people that we serve as needed using Agency van or own vehicle.
  7. Navigate internet browser to complete responsibilities of the position, enter data into Agency DART system, and utilize Agency email system.
  8. Provide overall coordination/direction to assigned people that we serve and Gesher staff. Address any staff performance issues with their supervisor.
  9. Perform job coach job duties, as needed.
  10. Train staff. Provide feedback to Gesher staff and people that we serve on positive behaviors as needed.
  11. Monitor the billing/wages paperwork to ensure accurate and timely completion including pay scans and shippers as appropriate.
  1. Recommend training needs for the people that we serve, including service termination if warranted, with the final decision left with the appropriate staff.
  2. Market Gesher services and/or expansion of existing services in conjunction with Gesher management directions and consistent with long term goals.
  3. Serve on Agency committee(s) as appointed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental conditions:

  • Moderate noise (i.e., business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic).
  • Ability to work in a confined area.
  • Ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period.

Physical requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, sit; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard, reach, stoop, kneel to install computer equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
  • Light to moderate lifting in required.
